ESL Webinar: The “Big Picture” of Assessment and Its Role In Instruction

The purpose of this webinar is to support teachers of English as a Second Language (ESL) in using assessments to determine class content and instructional practices and to provide feedback to students. This webinar will begin with an overview of the types of assessments and how they are used to determine placement and collect performance data. Examples of each type of assessment will be presented during the webinar. 

The goal is to increase knowledge and skills in designing and utilizing a variety of assessments in the adult ESL classroom to measure progress in language and literacy development. 

Presenter Bios:

Michael Antosch is the PAACE ESL Division Co-chair. He has earned a Masters of Science of Education from Temple University, with a specialization in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. Since then, he has worked in adult ESL with Beyond Literacy for seven years. He has taught classes ranging from the High Beginning to Advanced levels, as well as Bridges classes for transitioning into careers or post-secondary education. Michael has also spent this time collaborating with colleagues to advise on program improvement, adapt and enhance instructional materials, and integrate Distance Learning programs into the curriculum.


Kimberly Chernesky recently completed her Doctoral degree in Educational Leadership and Management with a concentration in Learning Technologies from Drexel University at the end of 2021. She has worked in adult education for the last decade in different capacities and has experience as an ESL Coordinator and has taught all levels of adult ESL.

Dr. Chernesky also holds a Master of Science degree in reading education with certification as a reading specialist K-12 and a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education (K-6) and early childhood (N-3). Prior to working in adult education, She has worked as a Reading Specialist (K-5) and has taught in a 1st and 5th grade classroom. Kimberly has served on the PAACE Board as the ESL Division Chair since 2016.
